I used to follow that process one year ago, but now I don't, although I use a similar method on some of my pics (like "Together"): I draw them first with low-contrast colors, and then I change the contrast and add light, shadows, and detail. I didn't use that method on this pic, though. I think it looks more realistic if you just draw it with the final colors.
